Overview

The goal of this course is to provide healthcare professionals with the opportunity to learn, practice, and understand the science behind a variety of evidence-based tools that they can incorporate into their lives and clinical practices to reduce the negative physiologic effects of stress and its impact on healthcare professional well-being/burnout risk and thus improve quality and safety of patient care, as well as translate these skills to sharing with their patients. The skills taught in this course include a variety of mind-body practices (e.g., meditation, mindfulness, yoga, breathing exercises, short relaxations), cognitive skills (borrowed from CBT, ACT, and positive psychology), and lifestyle-based approaches (recuperative sleep, physical activity, nutrition, social support, creativity, and humor). The course will be delivered in a live online format with didactic material, experiential exercises, interactive exercises in small breakout rooms, and opportunities for reflection, discussion, and to ask questions. Course participants will also receive written material and access to a website with guided recordings to practice the tools taught between sessions.

The SMART Program will meet online once a week for 8 weeks from 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm. Please note that you will need to only register once.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Develop personal strategies to enhance mindful awareness, curiosity, and listening skills to enhance cultural and linguistic competency.
  2. Understand how stress exacerbates implicit bias.
  3. Develop personal strategies to enhance mindful awareness and reduce physiologic stress to minimize the impact of implicit bias on patient care.
  4. Define the body's response to stress, known as allostasis and allostatic load, and the role it plays in the development and/or exacerbation of medical conditions.
  5. Identify the physiologic effects of the stress response and, in contrast, the relaxation response on the brain and body.
  6. Recognize how modifiable lifestyle behaviors impact sleep and the role of sleep in resiliency.
  7. Recognize how diet, physical activity, and social support contribute to resiliency.
  8. Improve ability to motivate patients toward sustainable behavior change.
  9. Acquire skill in state-of-the-art cognitive behavioral approaches to apply to patients with a range of stress-related emotional and physical problems.
  10. Enhance the patient-provider relationship to positively affect patient outcomes.
  11. Develop skill in multiple evidence-based tools for decreasing the physiologic effects of stress.
  12. Develop a suite of self-care practices to enhance personal resilience and mitigate the negative effects of stress on clinical practice.
