Overview

The goal of this course is to provide program directors and other faculty with methods to best support residents and fellows experiencing challenges in communication and/or professionalism. Utilizing elements of motivational interviewing and SMART goals the course introduces a coaching conversation structure that can help the program director and trainee constructively consider feedback together. We use a combination of didactic and case study/role-playing approaches to provide these tools and allow attendees to practice with the methods. The goal is to provide benefit to both program directors as well as residents where challenges around communication and professionalism can be viewed as an opportunity for support, with the trainee as collaborator, rather than a punitive, corrective conversation that is more directive. Doing so can help optimize outcomes through harnessing adult learning principles.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Identify core issues leading to lapses in professionalism and communication.
  2. Apply best practices to intervene with student and trainee lapses.
  3. Develop a collaborative action plan with a trainee.
  4. Identify how to use a cultural competence lens in providing feedback.
  5. Recognize the role that implicit bias can play in trainee experience.
