Overview

This four-hour class is designed to equip the healthcare professional with basic knowledge and the skills necessary to provide inclusive and affirming care. This course delves into critical topics such as gender identity, barriers to receiving care, communication practices, medical and surgical options for gender affirmation and strategies to improve the patient experience. Through the use of didactic lecture and patient panels, attendees will be able to both learn about best practice and understand care through the lens of patients we serve.


Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Identify medical and surgical options for gender affirmation, including benefits, risks, typical side effects, and possible medication interactions.
  2. Discuss communication practices that deepen trust between patient and provider.
  3. Compare and contrast gender identity from sex assigned at birth and sexual orientation.
  4. Discuss what terms to use when identifying primary and secondary sex characteristics.
  5. Identify available resources for transgender or nonbinary patients through UC Davis.
  6. Recall available resources for healthcare staff for continuing education.
